This Side of Midnight

We sit this close to midnight

finding ourselves in the dark

when your hand overlaps my hand

and we lose sight of where yesterday lands and tomorrow starts

so I hold you tighter to hold on to tonight

though I know time slips through our fingers as sand

and dust seeps under our doors

and sets to rest on photographs of lives long lived

this

our resurrection

comes from within

and only the light of memory lets us see

where nothing seems like something

and something reads as nothing

in this dark

on this side of midnight

how the dorsal fin is the scariest part of the shark

and we see what is lost to sight

is more frightening than anything we have ever seen.
