We Are Our Tomorrows

Tonight is my Dad’s birthday

we celebrated together

though he was there in spirit, not in body

he told me he’d wait for me on Jupiter

and I trust that he will keep that promise

and we the living sung him Happy Birthday

all his remaining friends and family

and we all know how the tune Happy Birthday goes

until we get to the second last line:

Happy Birthday dear ….

and the blank was filled in with every word from:

Dad, David, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle

that his name was lost in a cacophony of names

and I thought of God

and how one life force

can have so many interpretations.

Maybe we’re more Hindu than we know.
