Slapstick Tragedy

We laugh when people fall down

we don’t even crack a smile when they stand up

unless they are rising after a bad tumble

slapstick comedy is played to pratfalls and violence

laughter medicates the pain

but needs the pain to provoke it in the first place

how thin is this membrane

between laughing and crying

when we can’t see the difference

when someone convulsing in either has his back to us

same body language

here is the madness and manna of man

that the same thing that inspires our tears

shines them.
